1 in 3 homes in Australia contain asbestos.

Is your home safe?

Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency

Asbestos was commonly used in building homes between 1940 – 1970, although using or re-using asbestos-containing materials only became illegal in 2003.

Friable & Non-Friable (Bonded) asbestos: What’s the difference?

Friable Asbestos

Friable asbestos is brittle when it’s dry, and can be crumbled in the hand. It’s considered the most risky kind of asbestos to have around as the fibres can be easily inhaled. Examples include:

  • Insulation around hot water pipes
  • Asbestos rope
  • Loose-fill asbestos, used in ceiling insulation ie ‘Mr Fluffy’
  • Asbestos products that have been in a fire or are damaged, broken or weathered, including hail or chemical damage

Non-friable or bonded asbestos

Non-friable or bonded asbestos products are solid, rigid and can’t be reduced to powder by hand pressure. The asbestos fibres are tightly bound in the product and are not normally released into the air. Examples include:

  • Asbestos cement sheets
  • Vinyl floor tiles
  • Asbestos cement moulded products

If the removalist removes more than 10m2 or 100kg of asbestos waste, it must be tracked using WasteLocate.

It is illegal to:

  • Dispose of asbestos in kerbside bins, as it’s hazardous to Council staff and can contaminate other waste

Safety Comes First

Our goal is to keep you, your family, your workers and our crew safe. That’s why we take safety seriously and uphold all government and EPA regulations. Our crews are fully equipped with specialist asbestos equipment to do the job right the first time, every time.

Negative Air Units

Negative Air Unit filters air and keeps contaminated air from entering other parts of the building during a project. Our ‘neg air’ units are another way we reduce contamination risk throughout a site. With HEPA filters

Decontamination Units

We bring our portable decontamination unit to your job so our team can safely decontaminate from exposure to hazardous materials before leaving the work-site.

Air Monitoring

We check for air-borne asbestos particles before, during & after asbestos removal. For your peace of mind and to ensure the highest levels of hygiene, we use National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) laboratories for all sampling, testing and analysis.

Tile Removers (Chippers, Scrapers & Grinders)

Removing asbestos-containing vinyl tiles is complex. Not only to the tiles need to be chipped off, the glue (or ‘blackjack’) needs to be removed and sealed to contain any dangerous particles. Our crews carry everything required to complete your job safely.

Scaffolding & barriers

Keeping people away from an asbestos removal zone is crucial to limiting possible exposure. We bring all the barriers and scaffolding required to make a job site safe.

On-site chippies

We have qualified carpenters on hand to build custom structures on-site to create our own sealed ‘bubble’ for optimal staff and site safety, so you have peace of mind that your staff and site is safe.

Can I DIY asbestos removal at home?

Under NSW Government Health & Safety laws, any asbestos demolition over 10m2 must be done by a licensed asbestos demolition specialist and SafeWork must be notified of the removal.

Is it legal to remove asbestos from your own property?

In NSW it is legal to remove some non-friable asbestos yourself, but we strongly recommend it is removed by a licensed removalist as there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos. The amount to be removed defines who can remove and dispose of asbestos waste.

  • a homeowner can remove less than 10m2 of non-friable asbestos themselves, or
  • a tradesperson can remove less than 10m2 of non-friable asbestos on behalf of the homeowner.

More than 10m2 MUST be removed by a licensed specialist, like TMT Industries.

How to remove asbestos safely?

The asbestos removalist must:

  • Notify SafeWork of the removal
  • Display warning signs on the site
  • Use appropriate tools & Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
